seen, somewhat, from a switchback at 1.2 miles
into the hike, while we slithered a few yards off
trail to take a look at Secret Falls at 1.8 miles.
Continuing down the trail, I was privileged to
see something that I have never seen in the thousands of miles of hiking I've done. Almost hidden
by forest floor vegetation was an amazingly small
chipmunk that could not have been more than a
few days old.
Nearing the hike's end, I told Ken I was hoping
to spend the afternoon learning more about the
county's history. He suggested a visit to "Museum
Row" in Walhalla.
Again, everything fell perfectly in place. The
three museums were large enough to provide insight into the area and small enough to enable us
to experience them before closing times. Donald
Sanders, president of the Patriot Hall Association,
guided us around the Oconee Veteran's Museum
with materials going as far back as the Revolutionary War. I was impressed with how Assistant Curator Jennifer Moss was able to provide a quick,
but comprehensive overview of the Oconee History Museum when I informed her our time was
running short. Emily Cooper with the Museum of
the Cherokee in South Carolina related how there
were 27 villages, each with more than 100 people,

in what is now Oconee County when European
settlers arrived. Amazingly, there are now no tribal
lands in the entire state.
It's only a few miles' drive to Seneca where Jazz
on the Alley is presented free every Thursday evening from April to October. Sitting at an outdoor
table we enjoyed bar food and craft drafts from The
Spot on the Alley while listening to the party-band
sounds of Funk Factory.
Back in Walhalla, sleep came quickly within
the rustic luxury of Lofts Over Main B&B-bringing this full, but perfect day in Oconee County to
an end.
