Day Trip
Morning (History Told)
Take a trip back in time to Historic Jonesborough,
the oldest town in Tennessee and Storytelling
Capital of the World. Next, head to Greeneville
for a Walk with the President Tour to learn the story
behind the Lost State of Franklin, the state that
almost made it.
Afternoon (Only in Northeast Tennessee)
Find out how the Original Long Island Iced Tea was
created in Kingsport, followed by an adrenaline
rush with track laps at the Last Great Colosseum,
Bristol Motor Speedway.
Evening (Birthplace of Country Music)
Country music was born in Bristol, and you'll find a
museum, live radio station, and local tunes any time
of the year throughout downtown.
Weekend Trip
Friday (Hiking and Views)
Guided by White Blaze Hiking, hike along the
Appalachian Trail in Roan Mountain for 360
degree views of Tennessee and North Carolina.
Take in Watauga Lake with a meal at the Captains
Table located nearby in Hampton. Among the most
popular waterfall treks, the trailhead for Laurel Falls
is a short drive from Watauga Lake.
Saturday (Learn the Outdoors)
Dip through the forest at Johnson City's Tannery
Knobs Mountain Bike Park. Nearby Buffalo
Mountain offers five hiking options with views of the
entire city. And, if you need to stock up on gear,
Mahoney's Outfitters is close by. Tackle the outdoors
with a course at Nolichucky Outdoor Learning
Institute, or take a trip down the infamous Nolichucky
River with USA Raft Adventure Resort in Erwin.
Sunday (For the Kids)
Begin the day at Hands On! Discovery Center and
Gray Fossil Site, an all-ages science center and
active prehistoric fossil dig site dating back five
million years. Bays Mountain Park in Kingsport
features adventure courses, barge rides, hiking and
biking, a nature center, planetarium, and native
animal habitats. Spend the evening overlooking
Cherokee Lake or a round of disc golf in the
neighboring area of Morristown.
The Perfect Selfie Spot
Bristol's iconic sign along State Street has been a
landmark since 1910. The perfect spot for a photo,
the sign towers over two states, with the state line
down the middle of downtown marking Tennessee
and Virginia.
