Judith and Larry Helms, retired lawyers who live on Windy
Gap Mountain, have had completely opposite approaches to
their interest in writing. Larry is not interested in publishing his
thoughtful, elegant essays (written on yellow legal pads), literary
fiction, songs and poems but Judith is working on her third
commercially produced novel following " Grudge Tiger " and " The
Toronto Embryo. "
Judith says her genre " is way narrower " than Larry's " and
he's very stubborn " about how he wants to proceed. She insists,
though, that " he's the writer. " Their mutual support has been
vital, they agree.
Jim Morrison retired from the Secretary of Defense office in
1995, where he had written two books on international affairs.
In retirement he has written a historical and history book,
both titled " Bedford Goes to War, " as well as story collections,
poems and plays. He recommends creative writing classes at
community college or adult ed programs and-like others-that
writers groups are vital. " Go to writers conferences, read a lot in
the genre you are interested in and begin writing about personal
experiences " or areas of expertise.
