Chuck Lumpkin, author of the novels " Stranded " and " The
Empty Quarter, " says writing " is something I started doing
earnestly as an adult. I sat at the breakfast table and wrote on
a tiny tablet, a continuing story. My kids loved to rush into the
kitchen in the mornings and read the next episode. "
The former co-owner of a New Zealand-based software
company lives at Smith Mountain Lake. He had no formal writing
education but has always enjoyed telling stories and writing
essays.
He has some advice for want-to-be writers: " Most people I
know that are retired have many stories that they cherish and
yet don't write them down. Just get a tablet and start telling the
story. Don't worry about grammar, spelling or any of those socalled
rules of writing. Your story is the most important thing. All
the other stuff can be fixed later. "
In recent years, he has discovered that " traditional publishing
has taken on a totally different appearance. Self-publishing is
in fashion. I formed my own publishing company, Snowy Day
Publications. It has published over 20 books for other writers
and nine of my own. All are on Amazon. "
Lumpkin advises that " there are many writing tools available
for computers that aid in spelling, grammar and metaphors., "
but says, " don't despair if you don't get it right the first few
times. I have several manuscripts that never saw the light of
day. I thought they were good, but my test readers - my wife
and a few close friends - had thumbs down and, yes, they are
still friends. It bothered me at first but then as a writer you will
learn that a suit of armor may not be a bad idea. " I
