" No matter what your age, you can
look vibrant and gorgeous with
just a tweak. " BETH GARRETT
Miller's sales force at the small Moneta store is
almost all older than 50 and moves up toward the
mid-70s (she is 73), so they have skin in the game,
so to speak. She admits she has an eye for results,
customer by customer. " A customer comes in and
I imagine what she could look like, " she says. At
Comfort and Joy, " People get customer service
from women who know what they're doing. "
Miller has a wildly varied background (including
being a flight attendant for a long time) that
includes owning five different boutiques. She
learned her trade in earnest by managing E.I.
Randle and Present Thyme at Tanglewood Mall
in the 1980s before opening her Foxx store and
finding dramatic success instantly. Foxx was
high end. " We brought in a totally different line "
and that resulted in $60,000 the first month of
operation, she says.
Comfort and Joy doesn't go that route. " I have
nothing over $79, but the quality is there, " she
says.
Meanwhile, Garrett is showing women how to
put on their best face and which colors aid in that.
She strongly recommends that aging women avoid
dark colors because " dark colors cast shadows and
make the face age. " The right cosmetics, applied
with restraint, combined with the right colors for
the individual " make the face pop. "
Garrett insists that " at this time in life, skin
care is really important. If you ignore it, you miss

the opportunity to keep your face looking good. "
Hydration is vital. " At minimum, " she says, " wash,
tone and use anti-aging serum and a moisturizer "
on a daily basis. " Do the back of the hands, the
neck " in addition to the face. Vitamin C, she says,
" takes out the aging spots and you are never too
old or too young to start. "
Miller's clothes complement or hide aging
figures and are often layered and flowing, giving
a soft look. " Beth will disagree with this, but the
right clothing is more important than the right
color, " she says. At the base, " I've never met a
woman who can't wear white. Black and red are
strong and make you look tired. I ask women to get
a little out of their comfort zone, to trust me. "
A number of women enter her shop " ready for
something a little different, " says Miller. " They're
going through a divorce, or Corona and they want
to live again. It is helped by looking better. "
She suggests that jeans, flip-flops and
" something flowy and elegant will take you
anywhere. "
She is adamant that a good look doesn't have
to break the bank. Hair color and makeup from the
pharmacy work well, she says. " You don't have to
spend $150 to get your hair colored. It is a luxury.
You can spend $8 at CVS and color it yourself. "
" No matter what your age, " says Garrett, " you
can look vibrant and gorgeous with just a tweak. " I
