to Meet Someone? "

It is a fair question with a lot of answers for the Baby Boom generation.
O
ne of the joys of
dating when you are
older is that you know
your dealbreakers and
are quick to move on if
the situation is not right, " says registered
nurse Sandra Collins.
When the situation is right, she has
discovered to her delight, you do what
people have done since there were
people.
She's 62 these days and after lookin'
for love in all the wrong places for the
past few years, she hooked up with Dan
Comstock (64) at an overlook near New
Castle. " He was sitting on the rock wall
looking at his phone, puzzled. He asked
me how to get to I-81 in a strong Northern
Minnesota/Canadian accent. I laughed
and said, 'You are obviously not from
around here.' "
He wasn't. He was working as a heavy
equipment operator on a gas pipeline,

which had been shut down and he
thought he'd explore the area on his
motorcycle.

The initial meeting was talky and
cordial. He asked if she'd be his tour
guide for a bit. One thing led to another
and in 2019, they were married on her
60th birthday.
Love in the later stages of life isn't all
that different than at any other stage
according to several people from the area
we talked to who are playing the dating
game and getting Social Security at the
same time. Most didn't want their names
used because, as one said, " That might
hurt my chances out there. "
" Out there " can be a scary place for
anybody, but if you've been in a marriage
for years, or been otherwise occupied,
there are a lot of questions, chief among
them, " How do I meet somebody who
would be a fit? " and a lot of answers that
we'll discuss in a minute.
Consider that Leah Weiss (74) of
Lynchburg met her sweetie, Dave
Harpster (72), in 2016 on a hike with a
group of retirees. He had been dividing
his time between his home in Michigan
and Lynchburg, where his daughter's
family lived. Weiss is an author who had
just finished her first novel.
They had a lot in common, though he
was a widow and she had been single for
a quarter century. She " vowed never to
get married again, " she says. Harpster
changed her mind with the help of a
couple of hikers who worked to get them
together. She told him immediately she
wasn't marriage material. He persisted.
Ultimately, she asked him to move
in-a very 21st Century decision-and he
