DEVILED EGGS
It's not an easy thing to uproot and move - once
again - a family with three daughters not yet 20, but
anchoring mountains and comforting familiarities can
soften the ordeal.

THIS PAST SUMMER, our family of five moved from
the flatlands of Louisville, Ky., to the mountains of
Roanoke, our 11th move in 25 years of marriage. My
husband, an Episcopal priest, was elected Bishop of the
Diocese of Southwest Virginia, a lifelong position, so
Roanoke is where we stop. For good. Ministry, similar
to the military, has both caused and allowed us to live
in several different communities in North Carolina,
South Carolina, in the cities of Chicago and Nashville,
and in East Tennessee, where I was born and raised.
After living in the 17th-most-populated city for the
past seven years, I was relieved to move to these quiet

hills and pink-in-the-morning mountain skies. The
week we moved in, I walked the steep, rocky hill near
our house and saw a hawk watching, waiting on top of
a tree. A momentary stillness then a swoop and dive for
lunch. In that still moment, I heard these Blue Ridge
Mountains clamoring. I had finally come back home.
It wasn't until nobody noticed that I noticed. The
Kroger cashier, the tire guy at Firestone, the waitress
at Thelma's Chicken and Waffles. None of them looked
at me si-gogglin' when they heard my flat "i's" or East
Tennessee expressions. Though the dialects of East
Tennessee and Southwest Virginia are not identical,
my speech does not seem to sound strange to people
here. In the places we lived before, I felt I had to adapt
my twangy native tongue to fit in, to apply for jobs, to
be taken semi-seriously. I assumed that people in all
Southern towns would accept my speech but South
Carolinians, for example, busted me as an interloper
when I said "butter" instead of "buttah." Like a Roanoke
Railhouse Switch Monkey beer on my lips, my natural
speech has popped, is now fizzing, flowing freely.
LIVING AWAY FROM MY FAMILY of origin has been
difficult in many ways, but it has been so long that I
have learned to adjust. I have not, however, been able
