the Blue Ridge Parkway. SoRo also ranks high with
medical folks who want to be within walking distance of the huge medical complex of Carilion Clinic,
Carilion-Virginia Tech Medical School and Carilion
Roanoke Memorial Hospital clustered near the river
and the park. An apartment and retail project underway across from the med school is scheduled to
include a kayak launch point.
South Roanoke housing includes large established
older homes, new townhomes and condos; few rentals. Home prices up to $700,000-plus.
Other communities that boast of easy greenway access: Wasena, the Memorial Avenue area of Grandin
Village, and the Grandin Court area near Patrick
Henry High School in southwest city.
Wasena, developed as the city's first suburbs in the
1920s, has established homes from under $150,000$250,000+.
Greenway Coordinator Liz Belcher likes to point
out that any community with sidewalks is walkable,
and this includes Old Southwest, Roanoke's designated historic neighborhood near downtown. Old
Southwest is home to a major park that includes a
dog park. Old Southwest is a tight-knit collection of
residents who have a national award-winning neighborhood organization dedicated to preservation.
Old Southwest has four-square and Victorian
homes generally in the $225,000 up range.

Golfing enthusiasts have two extra special choices
for living near the greens, in Ashley Plantation in
the Daleville community of Botetourt County and
in Hunting Hills in south Roanoke County. Ashley
Plantation off U.S. 220 was developed from former
orchard land in 1999 and includes a public 27-hole
course complete with a golf academy. Ashley is positioned across from the Botetourt Center at Greenfield, with hiking and biking trails and access to the
Botetourt Sports Complex. Hunting Hills Country
Club's private 18-hole course opened in 1971 and is
surrounded by upscale homes of varying architecture
styles, but all in established woodlands. It is accessible from U.S. 220 South. The two communities'
home prices are comparable.
Ashley Plantation has homes built since 1999 at
prices ranging from $350,000-$640,000. Hunting
Hills homes generally range from $300,000 to $1
million-plus.
Hanging Rock Golf Club in Salem, voted the best
course in the valley by readers of The Roanoker magazine, is close to a variety of housing options, mainly
