retired couples here are in addition to the outdoor
sporting opportunities, which bring in the younger
50-plus couples in search of satisfying work and active outdoor lifestyles. And the overlap in interests
between the groups is considerable.
The outdoor orientation of the region is found in
every city, county and town, both in daily life and
in the numerous events that bring its history to life.
From Renaissance fairs to kite-flying contests to reenactments of Civil War history events and opera,
there is a wealth of entertainment, involvement and
activity to choose and enjoy. Add to these a robust
artists' community and Roanoke's Taubman Museum
of Art with its collection of old masters mixed with
contemporary events. The museum, centered in the
City Market area, is near Center in the Square, a collection of museums for science and history. Only a
few blocks away, The Jefferson Center, a renovated
high school, offers performances ranging from jazz
to Latin dancing and is the venue for Opera Roanoke.
Live performances of the Metropolitan Opera can be
viewed in the auditorium at Virginia Western Community College.
Programs at the area colleges - Roanoke College,
Hollins University and Virginia Western - satisfy the
continuing thirst for learning. Roanoke College's El-

derscholar Lecture Series has been running since 1984
and includes outdoor trips for canoeing and hiking.
Hollins University regularly brings in national speakers
and music events, and Virginia Western has joined the
American Association of Community Colleges' program for Plus 50 students who want to change careers,
brush up on skills or just learn for learning's sake.
Roanoke County's Green Ridge Fitness Center, the
Roanoke and Salem Ys, and the Carter Athletic Center
at the private North Cross School in Roanoke County
have abundant fitness and general programs for older
adults. The county's expansive list of pottery classes
has contributed to the growth of a major pottery group
with an annual show. The valley's library systems work
together to provide on-site programs and access to a
wealth of electronic books and magazines.
Two major hospital systems, Carilion Clinic and
LewisGale Medical Center, serve the valley, and the Salem VA Medical Center provides care for some 112,000
veterans in 26 counties. Carilion Roanoke Memorial
Hospital, a Level 1 trauma center, holds The Joint Commission Disease-Specific Certifications in heart attack,
heart failure, hip and knee replacement and stroke.
LewisGale in 2013 was named a "Top Performer" by
The Joint Commission, which accredits hospitals.
