Tycho Shea-Gangloff of Salem is 14 and a
high school freshman, but you don't have to
go much farther than the name* to see a dude
emerging. You can also see a young teenager's
uncertainty, awkwardness and hesitation until
the conversation turns to important stuff, like
video games, school and, gulp!, girls.
Remember, this guy is younger than a wellworn pair of hiking boots, but here's what he
has to say: "What makes me different is that
I get along with most people quite easily. I
would say I have swagger, though others may
disagree. I like to do things my way, but I often
over-think, so that usually puts me out of making any huge decisions.
"I'm not very rebellious. I may fight a bit
to get something done my way, but I usually
back off. I'm rebellious with my friends when
we are playing games together and possibly
sometimes with my mother when she tells
me to do something." Ah, mom. Dude's best
friend? Dude's antagoniste?
Tycho hasn't built much of a resume yet, but
he has built a computer (using the Amazon
parts store), the one in his living room where
the action is. He and his buds go to war on that
computer. He's good at algebra and
likes theater. What dude doesn't
like theater, or at least theatrics?
Bottom dude line: "I know
how to play the cards dealt to
me, and I draw a mean stick
figure."
Oh. We didn't get to the
girls. Later, dude.
(*Named for Danish astronomer Tycho
Brahe. Says his mama,
Amy Shea: "I have
a penchant for the
number 23, so both
our children have
names that are 23
letters long, Tycho
Bascom Shea-Gangloff and Willa Simone
Shea-Gangloff. He is
also named for Bascom
Lamar Lunsford." Lunsford was the founder of
the Mountain Youth Jamboree in Asheville, N.C.)
