MIKE ROSENBERGER'S man cave décor
is heavy on animal heads. Dennie Denison
and Steve Boyd opted for memorabilia from
their alma mater, Virginia Tech. All three fit
the mancavesite.org definition of such a spot,
"a room or space (as in a basement) designed
according to the taste of the man of the house,
to be used as his personal area for hobbies
and leisure activities."
No matter if the retreat is an elaborate
room or just a nook, a man's "cave" houses
icons of his special interests - hunting, car
racing, football or even beer drinking. Heavy
on testosterone, in other words.
Mike Yost, the founder of mancavesite.org
first used the term "man cave" in 1992 and the
following year, the popular 1993 book, "Men
Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus"
further pushed the idea. Author John Gray,
in a chapter "Men Go to Their Caves and
Women Talk," discussed how men go inside
their heads (their caves) to solve problems.
Rosenberger considers his retreat as a good
place to hang out with family and friends
and a place to display his hunting trophies.
Seven deer heads, a wild boar and a few other
animal trophies are on the walls. "I can't put
those anywhere else in the house."
"For my 40th birthday, we enclosed the
porch, added a gas fireplace and a 51-inch
TV," says Rosenberger, who is general manager of Grand Home Furnishings' Valley View
Mall store. "We have little get-togethers. It is
a man cave." He and son Jake watch a little
car racing and reminisce about their hunting
experiences.
