The Franklin Road interior feels
classically modern.
Dude, Take Her!
The bistro-style Italian restaurant on
Franklin Road offers classics wellcooked, variations on themes, a
Tiramisu well worth the calories and an
atmosphere just right for date night.
AN INCOMPLETE LIST of things I think Roanoke
doesn't really need (in no particular order): a new weather blogger; another place to grab a microbrew; the Mill
Mountain Star amped up by another 10,000 lumens; and
a new Italian restaurant.
The loss of Norberto's notwithstanding, another Italian restaurant just didn't seem like a good idea - the
region is saturated with our share of them, ranging from
excellent to mediocre - so when I learned that Salem's
Mamma Maria's was opening a second location in the
vacated SoRo Chill & Grille space, I didn't give it a moment's notice.

Then, on the first cold night of winter, I had one of
those moments that all of us have every so often: I just
couldn't bear the thought of cooking. That's when my
boyfriend suggested that, yes, this might be the right
time to head over to Mamma Maria's and check it out.
It was a Wednesday evening, a little late by Roanoke
standards for weeknight dinner - I think we were seated
at 7:30 pm - and the restaurant was expectedly empty,
just us and two other tables finishing up. But a fire was
crackling in the fireplace (well, it's a gas fireplace, but
still), our server was friendly and knowledgeable about
the menu, and the pours of wine-by-the-glass were
generous.
To start, we were offered the house salad, an almost
(to me) dinner-sized portion of romaine lettuce, freshly
sliced cucumbers, green bell peppers, and tomatoes,
along with a basket of warm focaccia. What could have
seemed tedious and old-school was actually refreshing
in its simplicity and quality - the salad was crispy, not
mealy, the bread airy with a complex, floral olive oil. It
