even change the batteries out for the elderly.
Public education events can also be one of the
most rewarding parts of her job, too.
"When a little guy comes up with a firefighter t-shirt on knowing we'd visit and we
know we're making memories for him, or
when we have a family with a new baby come
to get their car seat installed and put them
at ease, it's truly gratifying," Bradbury says.
"We also talk to juveniles who start fires and
it's rewarding to see their behavior change."
Social media is another way Bradbury gets
the word out. "People don't think a fire or accident will happen to them. It's about getting
our message to as many people as possible.
Social media allows me to trickle out information and citizens will share it with their
neighborhoods and community."
With new groups of children each year or
senior citizens who need to be reminded of
fire issues as they get older, she's constantly
meeting new people.
"I love to be out in the community. I want
people to know they can always call our department if they need something, especially
public education. There is no dumb question."

ROANOKE CITY FIRE/EMS
To be on the fire department in City of Roanoke, you have to be able to be both a basic
EMT and firefighter. Firefighter John Dixon
began volunteering with EMS in 1989; within a month, he was working in the ER, then
transferred and joined the fire department.
Quiet, self-assured and completely humble,
Dixon waves off any type of congratulatory
response for simply doing his job.
"I always had a calling. I just like helping
people," Dixon says.
Currently at Station #8, Dixon has 20 years
with the city and 18 with the fire department.
He also works part time as a paramedic at
LewisGale Hospital, where he does a little bit
of everything; drawing blood, starting IVs,
giving fluids and EKGs are only a few parts
of the job. He's even delivered babies in the
ambulance in the parking lot of Community
Hospital.
The most rewarding part of his job is helping the people who don't want to bother him
for help. It might be the ill, elderly lady who

"The main piece of advice I can give them is to study a lot.
They're going to study and take classes their whole lives
and the more EMT levels you do, the more stress you have.
Sometimes you show up on scene and you're it. Everyone
in the room turns to you for help. It can be hectic and
stressful but it's always rewarding."
