a part of nearly everything
that happens on campus,
whether it's the design of a
building or parking lot, putting policies in place, or crisis management planning.
Harris adds that there's more to police life

feet. Harris is a part of nearly everything that
happens on campus, whether it's the design of
a building or parking lot, putting policies in
place, or crisis management planning. Harris
writes the plans to get VWCC back in order
if there were a tornado or other disaster. He
also handles scheduling, officer training, and
continuity operations.
While Harris admits to spending a significant amount of time playing on the Wii, he
and his 10-year-old daughter also spend quality time metal detecting.
"I scan the grounds and she digs when
the alarm sounds. We can spend all day doing nothing but marking spots and digging
up the items. Our biggest prize was a 1732
British half-cent found in an old New Jersey
farmhouse."
Harris enjoys the freedom that comes with

his job. While paperwork is important, he
enjoys building relationships with the community. When things are bad, he wants to be
the one to get the call.
"I was in Vinton working the night shift one
summer, sitting with the car turned off in a
troubled neighborhood. It was a quiet, beautiful evening. Sitting in that position may sound
strange but I thought to myself, 'it doesn't get
any better than this, waiting for the radio to
chime in and tell you what to do next.'"

Detective Eddie Hopkins is more than familiar with the ongoings of the Roanoke
City Police Department. He started out
with street patrol, did DARE for a year, has
been a bicycle cop, SWAT team member

on campus and recognize potential threats.
They've made at least two similar videos for
other community colleges.
His preparation led to VWCC being recognized as the safest college in Virginia in 2013.
While he commends his nine officers, he also
credits the students who keep their eyes open
and communicate with the department. Faculty and staff are also attuned to any possible
issues and know Harris will be there to help
at a moment's notice.
