COURTESY OF VIRGINIA TECH

Warner Dalhouse:
Michael Friedlander: "The goal is
a total of more than 500 institute
babies by 2054."

MEDICAL RESEARCH: VTC-RI'S IMPACT

MICHAEL FRIEDLANDER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
VIRGINIA TECH-CARILION RESEARCH INSTITUTE
Friedlander has been the lead horse in developing VT-CRI as a major force in the region
and is getting considerable credit for bringing
in talent that is world class at every level. Here
are his projections:
"Over the next four decades, the VT-CRI
will continue to serve as a major engine, driving the economic, educational, technological,
and cultural progress of the Roanoke Valley
as well as serving as a potent force for diversification. In its first four years, the institute
has already had an economic impact of more
than $200 million, with an annual payroll of
$10 million.
"A major legacy of the institute will have
been to help Roanoke achieve its rightful
place on the national and world stages as a
leading innovation hub situated in a place of
extreme beauty.
"The institute's most important legacies
will be the sweat equity, intellectual capital,
and community involvement that the many
talented and hardworking researchers and
administrators have invested in our area. ...
More than 40 babies have been born to employees in the institute's first four years.
"By 2054, the institute's research expenditures should surpass $100 million a year, with
an annual economic impact of more than a
quarter billion dollars. Riverside will be home
to a bustling, vibrant community with worldTHE

leading biomedical research and a thriving
living community. The institute will undergo
a major expansion, as the entire Riverside
area achieves top-three academic medical
center status in the Mid-Atlantic and top 20
in the United States. The researchers who join
our community will continue to be diverse -
many with international backgrounds, adding to the community's vitality. The institute
will continue to spearhead Virginia Tech's
growth into the Roanoke Valley, particularly
in the biomedical and health domains. And
our scientists will remain productive not only
in their research but also by reaching a total
of more than 500 institute babies by 2054."

VT-CRI will continue
to serve as a major
engine, driving the
economic, educational,
technological, and
cultural progress of the
Roanoke Valley as well
as serving as a potent
force for diversification.

"Tech will be
doing close to a
billion dollars in
research."

LEADERSHIP:
SHIFTING POPULATION

WARNER DALHOUSE,
COMMUNITY LEADER,
RETIRED BANKER
Dalhouse has been at the center of Roanoke's
vision to move forward for the past 40 years.
"Projecting 40 years into the future is not
possible. Ten or 15, maybe 25, but 40 is too
far out for any realistic expectations of being
right." That established, he launches into his
prediction:
"In far less than 40 years (my guess would
be about 20), the Roanoke Valley will no
longer be the population center of Southwest
Virginia. Montgomery County and Blacksburg will have overtaken us in that regard, so
leaders of that region will have more impact
than leaders in Roanoke.
"One of the clear imperatives of that
change is the need to continue and intensify
the cooperation and collaboration of business interests in Montgomery County and the
Roanoke Valley already started by Virginia
Tech and Carilion Clinic. It is most visible in
the creation of [Virginia Tech-Carilion Research Institute]. Nothing more significant
has happened in Roanoke since the railroad
came in 1882.
"The president of Virginia Tech and the
president of Carilion Clinic represent the
two engines that drive the economy of the
entire region and that influence will only be
enhanced over the next 40 years.
