of state. Blacksburg anchored the Washington
National Capital region as Virginia's other info
tech hot spot.
"Keyboarding replaced handwriting and
some schools offered remedial or specialized
courses in penmanship.
"After many K-12 school districts expanded
to an 11-month academic year and Advanced
Placement offerings, some bachelor's degrees
could be earned in three years. Bachelor's/
master's combination degrees become
common.
"Male enrollment in colleges and universities
nationwide, an early-century trend, dropped
to less than 40 percent by 2025. In 2030,
President Victoria Hernandez pushed through
congress legislation to boost enrollment in this
underrepresented group by 2054."
Gary Walton: "Guest rooms will have more
features of relaxation and comfort."
HOSPITALITY: RELY ON THE BASICS
GARY WALTON,
GENERAL MANAGER,
HOTEL ROANOKE &
CONFERENCE CENTER
Walton runs the best-known and one of the
most popular hotels/conference centers in
this region and the state. He also has a finger
on the pulse of the hospitality industry as a
whole. Here are his thoughts about what's
to come:
"We're at the point today (in some
markets) where guests can check themselves
in and actually open their guest room door
all on their smart phone. Twenty years ago
38 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014
Connectivity and entertainment options will
continue to evolve, creating environments
where the guests will have absolute control
over what kind of lighting they want, music,
television/movies (smart rooms)....
when we opened the Hotel Roanoke we
didn't even have e-mail.
"The reality is, the basics of the hospitality
business haven't changed all that much
over those 40 years. We provide a place for
travelers to sleep, shower, dine, attend a
conference or a special event. The quality of
the in-room amenities and overall facilities
has improved, but by and large, we're
providing the same basic goods and services.
"What has changed, however, revolves
around technology as the tools we (and our
guests) can use today are incredible when
compared to what was available in the
1970s. From property management systems
to reservation systems and the ability to
manage data has dramatically changed and
improved our industry.
"My sense is that in 2054, the baseline
services of the hospitality business will be
in place. Providing a comfortable room
and bath along with the ability to dine on
property and participate in conferences or
special events like weddings and community
fund raisers will still be the core of what we
deliver.
"I could visualize the guest room
transforming even more to mirror what
people have and desire in their own homes,
from plush bedding to larger bathrooms
that have more features of relaxation and
comfort, spa features within your own guest
room. Connectivity and entertainment
options will continue to evolve, creating
environments where the guests will have
absolute control over what kind of lighting
they want, music, television/movies (smart
rooms), etc.
"Hotel environments will be more
sustainable, while there will always be a
demand for luxury services by a certain
segment of the population. I see more selfservice initiatives. We are starting to see
room service disappear today in some hotels
and I would believe it may totally be a thing
of the past by the time 2054 is here."
CITY EVOLUTION III: TRANSITION
CHRIS MORRILL,
ROANOKE CITY
MANAGER
Many are comparing Morrill's tenure as
Roanoke City Manager to that of predecessor
Bern Ewert, considered one of the most
visionary of all city managers in the Star City.
Morrill is leading a downtown renovation,
population gain and an improvement in
city services rarely seen. Here is what he
anticipates:
"In 2014 Roanoke is striving to reach
its full potential, making great progress
in educational outcomes, public safety,
economic development, livability, and many
other areas important to building a strong,
healthy community.
"By 2054 Roanoke will be nationally
recognized - maybe even internationally
recognized - for its unsurpassed quality
of life. The city will be renowned for its
uniqueness and authenticity.
"The regional economy, while still
supporting a manufacturing base, will
be driven by health care, research, and
technology. Roanoke will be recognized for
its talented and diverse local craftspeople, as
well as the strong local food movement. Its
arts and cultural scene will be unsurpassed
for a city its size.
"We'll see an even closer connection
between Roanoke and Virginia Tech - and
the other area higher education institutions
- creating stronger ties for students, faculty
and research to Roanoke's urban amenities.
Building off initiatives that started in the last
few years, by 2054 the local governments in
the Roanoke and New River Valley regions
will have aligned their priorities and vision
to build a stronger regional economy.
"Roanoke will be one of the top 20 tourism
travel destinations in the United States
because of its vibrant downtown, with great
