FORTY YEARS AGO, WYBE AND MARIETJE
Kroontje founded a new kind of nursing home in the
heart of the New River Valley. The couple immigrated
to the U.S. from the Netherlands after World War II
and was dissatisfied with the senior living options in
America. Today, Warm Hearth Village is home to a
diverse population of senior adults from many different
socioeconomic backgrounds.
"We don't have just one type of resident," says Tambra Meredith, director of marketing and development.
"It was something our founder dreamed up when he
founded it back in the '70s. We have couples and singles, residents who are very independent and residents
with varying degrees of dependence."
Unlike at many traditional retirement communities,
residents at Warm Hearth Village have several different
living options from which to choose, including WoodsEdge, Blacksburg's first active-adult community, as
well as residential and assisted living facilities.
Another standout feature of Warm Hearth Village
is its staff. With customer service a top priority, Warm
Hearth recruits "the right people that share our values," according to Meredith.
"Customer service, quality and ethics are the core
values that we build everything around," says Meredith.
"The staff is a result of our value system and a big benefit to residents. When you have the right people doing
the right things, that makes it feel like home."
Warm Hearth Village offers many different amenities and activities for its residents. Film screenings,
off-campus trips, writers' groups, trail walks, Scrabble
and a book club are just a few of the programs available. At The Village Center, residents can take advantage of the fitness center and community gathering
spaces, including the Huckleberry Café.
"We offer fresh, local produce throughout the campus," says Meredith. Our goal is to use as many local
ingredients as possible."
There are even opportunities for residents themselves to produce fresh, local ingredients of their own.
