A LETTER TO YOUNG PROFESSIONALS
FROM A HOME-TOWN GUY

I have heard a few (very few)
people around town talking about
the Young Professionals scene in
Roanoke... or the lack thereof. That
is people saying that for those of
us in our 20s, 30s and 40s there's
nothing to do around here except eat.
I even heard one person go as far as
to describe Roanoke as a "retirement
community." Here's what I have to
say to those folks:
I think that the characterization of
Roanoke 10 years ago as a retirement
community is probably pretty fair.
However, where we are today in
Roanoke is a really interesting and
different place to be. About 10
years ago, a group of people got
together and saw that there was
an opportunity to make downtown
Roanoke an epicenter of the
community, and a renaissance, if you
will, of this town has taken hold.
As Roanoke is starting to reclaim its
identity as a niche, cool progressive
city, to be a young professional
experiencing that growth is exciting.

The wave has been initiated. We
haven't crested yet, but what
happens in the next 10 years is going
to be really telling of where Roanoke
is going to be in the next 30 or 40
years.
The naysayers are going miss out.
You're going to miss out on being a
part of a town, a city that you have
so much influence over. You can
come to Roanoke and interface with
CEOs almost immediately. They love
to hear what we're talking about,
what turns us on and you might have
a conversation like that with someone
and they love your idea and then
before you know it your idea is a
reality. That's an opportunity that not
a lot of places provide and Roanoke
can and we will continue to be able
to in the future. Don't focus so much
on what we are now, focus on what
we can become.
Sincerely,Greg
