HOW "FRAMED" CAME TO ROANOKE
Taubman Museum of Art Board of Trustees Vice President and Chair of the Museum's
Collection Committee W. Heywood Fralin talks about how a signature Norman
Rockwell painting found a home in Roanoke.

ON DECEMBER 4, 2002, a bit of history was made for
Roanoke, Virginia. Sotheby's Auctions in New York had
offered Norman Rockwell's "Framed" for sale, and the
Art Museum of Western Virginia (now the Taubman
Museum of Art) had taken notice. The painting, a tour
de force work created by Norman Rockwell, one of
the most popular American artists of the past century,
depicts artworks reacting to actions outside their frames.
Rockwell's painting Framed was reproduced on the
cover of The Saturday Evening Post on March 2, 1946.

In December of 2015, Amy Moorefield, Taubman Museum of Art's deputy director of exhibitions and collections, had a chance to catch up with
W. Heywood Fralin, Taubman Museum of Art Board
of Trustees vice president and chair of the museum's
Collection Committee, to hear more about the
museum's acquisition of "Framed."
Amy Moorefield.: How important was it for
Roanoke, Virginia, to have a Rockwell?
W. Heywood Fralin: Terribly important. At that
time, members of the museum were working with
the Horace G. Fralin Charitable Trust to develop
an important collection of American Art by artists
working from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. The
goal was to provide a unique opportunity for residents
and students of the Roanoke Valley to have access to
