WHAT'S IN A NAME?
David N. Gaines, Ph.D., State Public Health Entomologist
for the Virginia Department of Health, Division of Environmental Epidemiology, says that the term seed ticks is
an old rural Southern expression for lone star tick larva which
can swarm people, typically from late July through September.
"These larvae look like little grey seeds when they fill up with
blood," he says. "Rural folks also sometimes use seed ticks to
describe lone star nymphs which can also swarm a person in
numbers (April through July)."
However, Gaines says that seed ticks is not a correct term
for blacklegged ticks. He adds that Southerners also refer to
the lone star species as deer ticks while Northerners apply this
term to the blacklegged tick. The former tick, in every stage
of growth, feeds on whitetails while the latter predominantly
does so as an adult, most often in October but also through

became similarly affected. It was
then that I feared that I had contracted Lyme Disease (LD) and

contacted my personal physician.
A dozen or more years ago that
same doctor (who asked that his
name not be mentioned in any
story involving LD), had warned
me that my outdoor lifestyle
made me a prime candidate to
develop Lyme. As a precaution,
he had also given me an experimental vaccine against LD, which
according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) is no longer available because of low demand and which would no longer
protect humans even if they had
taken it. Oddly enough, however,
vaccines exist for dogs but not for
cats.
