The Valley recently introduced the front-edge Regional Acceleration and
Mentoring Program, which helps take good ideas from the page to the
stage.

Roanoke County and Salem public schools continued to rake in academic honors as Roanoke City Schools have raised their graduation rate
by more than 30 points since 2008 to 90 percent most recently. That's
three points higher than the state urban average and on the edge of
the overall state rate (91.1 percent). Roanoke County's rate is 94.2 and
Salem's rate of graduation is 94.3.

Virginia Tech Carilion Medical College & Research Institute continues to
attract 4,000 applicants for 42 annual positions in its first-year class and
Jefferson College of Health Sciences has grown exponentially.

Virginia Western Community College's newish megatronics program has
raised the eyebrows of the business community.
As all of this was taking place, the Salem Chamber of Commerce and Junior
Achievement of Southwest Virginia held their annual Job Shadowing Day in late
October, 2017, giving high school students a chance to see what people actually do at work all day. More than 250 students from Salem watched for an entire school-length day as people in wildly varied jobs (Novozymes, Minuteman
Press, Oakey's Funeral Homes, the police department, etc.) went about their
daily routines. Some of the students took college field trips. Curtis Hicks of the
Salem school system hopes "the kids find a career of interest before they com-
