Roanoke's Higher Education Center has become a focal point for college education
in a city that doesn't have a state-supported university of its own. It is home for 14
Virginia-based colleges and universities sitting in the heart of downtown and has been
the source of nearly 100,000 degrees, certificates and workforce training programs.
It employs 310 people and its economic impact has been estimated at $32 million.
Virginia Western Community College has become a hallmark of practicality in
preparation of students for the workforce or the next step in their education. VWCC
is scheduled to open its new $30 million STEM (Science, Technology, Education,
Mathematics) building in 2019. The 72,000-square-foot building in what is now a
parking lot will continue the school's efforts to produce students who are workforce ready. VWCC has a history of working directly with the area's industries and
