as new machinery or techniques.
Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute and Jefferson College of Health Sciences have created sterling reputations nationally for
their health careers efforts. VTC is an unusual institution because it combines research with medical education, giving graduates a highly desirable skill level in
ever-changing and more complex medicine.
Jefferson College, once a tiny nursing school, now
has 1,000 students from 32 states and 25 programs, all
at its Elm Avenue campus.
The Roanoke Valley Governor's School for Science
and Technology, established in 1985, prepares elite students from seven local school districts (and 14 public
high schools) around the Roanoke Valley for high-end
colleges. It has 269 students. Costs are covered by the
school districts and the Virginia Department of Education.
The Burton Center for Arts and Technology in Roa-
noke began in 1962 with 75 students and was known
as a "trade school" with four areas of learning. Today,
with a large campus of its own, it divides classes into
five categories to prepare students for the workforce or
college: associates degree technicians, college bound
students, workforce entry, specialized programs and
adult education. There's a lot to choose from: auto
service technology, building trades, computer information technology, cosmetology, criminal justice, culinary
arts, early childhood education, EMT, game design and
cyber security, masonry, mechatronics, motorsports
and welding. It also has specialties in engineering,
mass communications, performing arts and visual arts.
There are 16 private schools in the Valley offering
an alternative to many families. Salem High's International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is offered to
"highly motivated" students. Overall, it appears the
Roanoke Valley has a little something for everybody
when it comes to education. n
