TWO MORE
Two more breakfast spots worthy
of supplying your most important
meal of the day are Scrambled
in the City Market
Building and The
Pancake House on
Williamson Road.
Both restaurants
are centrally located
in their respective
districts. Both offer a great breakfast.
The similarities, however, end here.
Scrambled caters to the downtown
hipster crowd. They proudly advertise
"farm fresh, cage free, organic eggs"
and a menu sufficiently full of trendy
takes on traditional breakfast items:
"Scrambled Style" eggs, homemade
salsa, Star City Shrimp and Grits and
Famous Vanilla French Toast, just to
name a few.
When I've dined at Scrambled,
I've enjoyed their Southern-style
Scrambled eggs and fluffy buttermilk
pancakes. My husband digs their
Steak Sliders. We both like their fun
downtown atmosphere-especially
when the weather is nice for outdoor
dining.

The Pancake House is anything but
trendy. It reminds me of the truck stop
diner where my family ate lunch every
Sunday after church when I was a kid.
It's a place where the waitress calls
you "Hun" and your coffee mug never
goes empty. It's old-fashioned, unfussy
breakfast food served up fast and hot,
piled high with homegrown hospitality.
I especially like their pecan waffle.
The pecans are a perfect complement
to their buttery, dessert-like batter. If I'm
feeling indulgent, I order a stack of their
chocolate chip pancakes to share (I
could never finish them on my own). The
chips melt through the pancake making
every bite taste like a
fresh-from-the-oven
chocolate chip
cookie.
The Roanoker's
very own food
photographer and local
foodie extraordinaire, John Park, thinks
Pancake House pancakes may be the
best in town. He's also a fan of the way
they flat top their corned beef hash,
making it "just crispy on the outside."
