Q: How did you meet?
Misty: Gavin and I met in dental school
during a clinic where his class was
practicing their scaling techniques on my
class' teeth! After battling through the
challenges of dental school together, our
friendship blossomed into another dental
school love story.
Gavin: In dental school. I was a year ahead,
but often our clinic sessions overlapped. It
was one of those relationships where you
are close friends for years, and then one
day you realize you love each other. "Harry
met Sally" kind of stuff.
Q: As a married couple with busy dental
practices and a family, how do you
manage the work-life balance?
Misty: The truth is, my four children are the
only reason I have balance, mental health
and true happiness. I did not come from a
family of doctors or even professionals. I
had to earn my position as an orthodontist.
My life was all work and no play from the
time until I had my first baby. Having kids
forced me to find balance in my life. Because
of my kids, I finally know how to work hard
AND have fun!

Gavin: It can be very difficult and stressful
at times. Whenever possible, I block off time
from my schedule to attend class functions
and sports games. And Misty and I make
time to be with each other - even if it's just
watching a Netflix movie together!
Q: What is unique about each of your
practices that set you apart from others?
Misty: From the minute patients walk through
my practice door, they find out that I'm a
little different from my colleagues. I am a
festive person that loves the practice of
Orthodontics probably more than the business
of Orthodontics. I spend less time trying to
grow my business financially and more time
trying to make my practice welcoming, fun
and affordable to the public. We have patients
that drive up to two hours to receive care at
our office.
Gavin: I do my best to provide high quality
care and ethical treatment. Dentists refer to
me because my treatment costs are affordable
and my staff does everything they can to
help patients. Offering zero percent payment
options, figuring out insurance coverage,
timely scheduling, promptly returning phone
calls; all the little things add up to a positive
experience.

Q: What does it mean to be recognized
as a Health Hero?
Misty: Being recognized is one of the
biggest honors I could receive. I entered
the field of Orthodontics after discovering
an innate ability and genuine love for this
subset of dentistry. I opened a private
practice because I wanted to provide the
highest quality of care to all members of my
community that had a need and desire for my
services. Being recognized is humbling and
inspiring. I am thankful to be recognized. I
am also inspired to keep working hard so as
to give even more people a reason to smile!
Gavin: It's awesome! I had maybe two
trophies my entire childhood. Now to get
recognized later in life for being who I
was all along is vindicating. Thank you to
whomever shared those kind words to The
Roanoker. And thanks again to my staff - I
share this award with you all!
