mergency Veterinary & Specialty Services of
Roanoke celebrated the opening of their new
facility in February. They now have 6 exam
rooms, a more spacious waiting room and have tripled
the parking capacity. EVSS has expanded and now has
three surgical suites, a larger ICU and has doubled
the square footage of the previous hospital.
EVSS opened in 1994 when a group of veterinarians
saw the need to work together so every clinic did not
have to be on call after hours. Eventually a full-time
staff was hired.
Dr. Maureen Noftsinger has worked at the clinic since
graduating veterinary school at Virginia Tech in 2001.
"The clinic has gotten busier and evolved into a true
emergency and critical care facility of which we are
so proud," Dr. Noftsinger says. "We work as a team so
we can help all other veterinarians in the area with
emergencies."
radiology suite and in-house laboratory can quickly
diagnose problems, while their pharmacy has most
of what is needed on hand to treat issues that walk
through their door.
The team also works with local rescue groups to
find homes for animals in need. They work with the
Community Animal Response Team, collect food and
gifts for local charities and are available for families
fostering pets through multiple different rescue groups
with medical concerns.
"We absolutely love when we have a good outcome,"
says Dr. Noftsinger. "Many of our animals are critically
ill and getting them through that is so rewarding to
our whole organization. We love being a part of the
veterinary team that handles the needs of the pets
in our community; we are a profession that loves
animals and the people that love them!"
In addition to their 24/7/365 emergency care, the
clinic also offers ultrasound, endoscopy, cold laser
for wound therapy, post-trauma critical care and
specialty services by referral. They also have a blood
donor program, and their euthanasia services are done
both at the clinic and at home. Their state-of-the-art
