W

ith the launch of the "Best of
Virginia Wildlife," we bring
to you a sampling of some of
our finest content from the recent past: stories that speak to the intimate connections
between you, our readers, and the wild animals that share Virginia's landscape. We
pay tribute to several focus areas where the
Department has invested significant dollars
and manpower in programs to recover or
shore up a species in decline. e elk and
the Bobwhite quail are two prime examples. We tip our cap to the fast-flowing,
coldwater streams in the western portion of
the state where fly fishermen have been
smitten by Virginia's magical-and elusive-trout for decades, and where we continue to stock over 600 miles of waterways.
We include a story about one of the often
understated, yet cantankerous snakes in
our midst and the research underway to
learn more about the habits and habitats of
Virginia reptiles.
This inaugural digital edition turns
the page to a new chapter in the life of
the magazine. Its introduction begins

the process of making select content
available online. Virginia Wildlife features
will become part of a broader effort to share
tales of the great outdoors with our readers
and with all constituents; stories will take the
form of blogs, photographs, videos, podcasts, and more. We are working now to capture and weave together various pieces of the
conversation.
e "Best Of" edition also serves as yet
another form of archiving and complements
the recent release of 62 years of magazine history in digital format, housed at the website
of the Library of Virginia. If you have not yet
done so, take a few minutes to wander back
in time through the pages of Virginia
Wildlife dating to 1950! Simply go to:
https://archive.org/details/libraryofvirginia.
All of these insights, we hope, will edify
and enlighten the journey of the coming 18
months as we count down to the 100th anniversary of the Virginia Department of
Game & Inland Fisheries in 2016-a noteworthy milestone that you will be hearing
much, much more about. We are excited
about celebrating that journey with you!
