Last Watch Thank you! Elvis Hoffpauir T hank you for your participation in and support of the 2013 MACS Training Event and Trade Show. Nearly 1,250 members of the MVAC industry convened for three days in Orlando for the forum. Participants from the service sector were rewarded with information and education from the leading authorities and top trainers in the industry, plus opportunities to source products, components, tools and equipment for their shops from the industry’s premier manufacturers and suppliers. I think it is important that everyone understands that a forum such as this doesn’t just happen; it is created through a lengthy process fueled by the investment by many of time, talent, passion and a fistful of dollars. Exhibitors who support the forum also fund the lion’s share of the costs. In addition to paying space rental that directly supports the MACS organization, other substantial costs borne by exhibitors include freight to and from the show for exhibits, booth setup labor, furniture and utility rentals, plus travel and per diem for management and customer service personnel. That adds up to a lot of commitment. Beyond that, many exhibitors also sponsor portions of the forum, including events such as the golf tournament, go-cart racing, keynote speaker and other celebrities, technical training sessions, and social events like receptions. These sponsor dollars are used to substantially reduce registration fees for participants. Attendees do pay registration fees, of course, and some argue that a few hundred dollars is too much to pay for two full days of technical training, a full day trade show that represents a virtual buffet for the discerning buyer and several meals with food, cocktails, even entertainment. Others argue that room prices should be lower. Let’s address the latter argument first. Likely one could get a much lower room rate at an End of Days Motel, even in a preferred destination city. Unfortunately, the End of Days Motel has only 18 rooms, parking for the same number, and lacks the 100,000 square feet of meeting and exhibit space which the MACS forum requires over a three-day span. Here are the facts of life about food in the Big City in a premium quality hostelry. You can go to your local shop-and-bag and pick up a ham and cheese sandwich, chips, an apple and a coke for $5 or $6, but when that same food is served to you on a linen tablecloth in a large, brightly-lit ballroom, you’re looking at half a C-note. Had two cups of coffee during a break? There goes another $7. The bottom line is this: Space rental for the forum is part of the facility’s value proposition, and the piper gets paid through a combination of food services and lodging rates for the group. That’s probably more Hotel Revenue 101 than you ever cared to hear, but it should help put costs for a forum such as MACS in perspective.
