We see our fair share of trucks, but until MACS member Gary Meteer of IHS Automotive sent me a copy of the current Quarterly Commercial Vehicle Report, I don't think I had any idea of the scope of the heavy duty and off-road vehicle marketplace. I found the report fascinating, and wanted to share some of the numbers with ACTION™ readers in this, our heavy duty and off-road vehicle issue. IHS Automotive reports, "The total number of commercial vehicles registered for use on the highways was 12,317,000 units at the end March 2015, an increase of 102,000 units from the end of the 2014 calendar year." For January through March 2015, IHS Automotive reports that there were 163,828 new commercial vehicles registered in the United States, along with another 189,344 used commercial vehicles. Those numbers represent a growth rate of 9% over the same period in 2014. That's a lot of vehicles! IHS Automotive is forecasting that by the end of 2015, there will be 687,000 class 3 through 8 vehicles added to our highways; that's a ...this vehicle population year over year increase of 4%. Here's the part that all of us in is significant... the service industry will find helpful: "Specifically, 32.5% of GVW 3-8 commercial vehicles registered to operate on the highways in the U.S. were produced prior to the 2000 model year. This vehicle population is significant and, therefore, important to parts manufacturers and service providers as a business opportunity." " The IHS Automotive data is a valuable read, and I learned a lot of great detail about the industry that I never knew before about class 3 through 8 trucks: who's making them, who's buying them, what kind of fuel they use and what regions of the country have the most fleets.
