Radiator service & repair

Reproductions & restorations
MACS member Glen-Ray Radiators of
Wausau, Wisconsin has been in business since
1964. R.C. Schirmer runs the automotive &
light truck repair shop which specializes in
restoring vintage radiators like the one from
that 1970 Datsun. But they also do something
unique: they make the world's only brand new
26" Chrysler licensed big block radiators, right
inside their shop. We're talking about authentic
reproduction Mopar (Chrysler, Dodge & Plymouth) radiators for 1966-1972 A-, B-, C-, and
E-Body vehicles like the 340 "Six Pack" Barracuda, Challenger, Superbird, and other hemi
cars. They also make some 22" models as well.
When rebuilding, the radiator is completely
disassembled and all parts immersed in a boil-

ing tank of caustic soda for approximately 30
minutes, after which they are pressure washed
and dried. Glass beading all parts comes next,
along with straightening and priming the side
brackets, fittings and tanks. Special dollies are
used to hold and de-dent the top tank, and of
course some tanks will turn out better than others, depending on how damaged they were to
start. The core itself is then rodded out, which
means a thin piece of steel is slid down each tube
to clear any debris, and then all tubes are resoldered into the header plate (this is what the tank
solders to).
Finally it's time to reassemble and test.
When it passes, it's placed in a boiling tank for
30 seconds to neutralize any fluxes or acids still
active, then it's dried, band filed (a tool to re-

move any excess solder on the tanks or top side
brackets where they are soldered to the tank),
primered and painted. Learn more at www.restorationradiators.com or call R.C. at (715) 8423352.

You have enough on your mind,
so let us take the worry out of your air conditioning needs.

Look for signs of overheating!
A white or grey powder inside the connection or the filler neck of the top tank is a sign of
cooling system overheat or steam, as is melting
or erosion of the nylon plastic tank. Air in the
cooling system will hinder heat dissipation and
greatly accelerate corrosion.
It is very important to identify what brought
the cooling system to overheat in order to prevent a repeated failure. Here are some key elements to check:
* Coolant filling procedure
* Low coolant level
* Bad thermostat
* Bad radiator cap
* Failed head gasket
* Radiator fan not coming on
* Debris causing reduced airflow
across the radiator
* Eroded water pump impeller
