Secondary-Loop mobile A/C
systems gain traction
TATA Motors Limited (TML),
MAHLE, and the Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development
(IGSD) are expecting impressive energy and cost savings in their demonstration of SL-MACs that have lower
charge and smaller refrigerant emissions. The business case for automobile manufacturers is whether the
added cost of components is offset
by lower refrigerant cost (particularly with two or more cooling points),
while the business case for owners is
if the energy savings and refrigerant
recharge are worth more than the added vehicle cost.
2017- 2025 Light-Duty Vehicle Greenhouse Gas Emission Standards. The regulations include, one of these credits for
increased use of recirculation air mode,
when the ambient is over 24°C (75°F.). It
should be noted that some vehicles, as of
2014, may have this feature.
This issue will become a concern in the
service industry, resulting in poor cabin air
quality.
Cabin contamination sources may result in safety and health issues for both
younger and older drivers.
Industry Indoor Air Quality standards
exist for passenger aircraft, homes and
buildings. There is concern for air quality in the vehicle cabin for the following
reasons:
* Carbon dioxide builds up in the
Mahle Behr Troy, in coordination with
Tata Motors and IGSD, presented their
SL-MAC (Secondary Loop Mobile A/C)
system during a demonstration at their
Lockport, NY technical center on April
7th.
Vehicle cabin air quality
addressed in SAE paper
Recently SAE International held
the SAE World Congress Experience,
WCX17 meeting in Detroit. During the
congress the Climate Control group convened for several technical sessions. These
informative gatherings included presentation of 16 technical papers. However, not
all papers written and published were
shared at the meeting. As they noted, climate control is critical to customer satisfaction to deliver thermal comfort, occupant safety, air quality and controls.
One of the published papers that was
not presented is "The Impact of Increased
Air Recirculation on Interior Cabin Air
Quality."
The EPA has issued regulations for
