SBD Step 5: Perform Diagnostics
Diagnostics can come in the form of DTC flow
charts, No DTC symptom tables, and even your
own reverse engineering using the published theory of operation (along with your understanding of
published schematics), to then arrive at a diagnosis
if all else fails. Still stumped? Tough problems can
come in the form of intermittent problems or concerns, and that's where tips from others can sometimes be life savers (think iATN and Identifix).

While Toyota has the best track record when it
comes to identifying module software updates for
service fixes in their TSBs, GM continues with a rating of around 55 percent. This means that 45 percent of GM's software update related fixes are not
documented in TSBs and PIs. The only way to find
the information you'll need to fix some of these
GM models is to look on their https://tis2web.service.gm.com/tis2web website, or simply Google "GM
CAL ID." Make that URL a favorite on your shop's
PC. See Figures 6 and 7.

VW Smart A/C Pressure Sensors

For years sensors have been part of the smart approach to making automotive HVAC more accurate
to ensure occupant comfort. The smart sensor VW
has been using for measuring their A/C high side
pressures is not your average analog output pressure transducer. A casual look at VW's schematic
reveals nothing unusual until you zoom in on the
actual sensor itself and see the symbols placed in its
outline. See Figure 8.
Looking at Figure 9, the symbol on the left side of
the sensor outline designates a pressure transducer,
while the symbol to the right of the transducer symbol appears to be a transistor. SBD Step 5 includes a
section titled "No Published Diagnostics - Analyze
and develop diagnostics / call technical assistance.
Lacking details for theory of operation and diagnostics, the solution is to piece together whatever
information you do have and come up with a plan
for diagnostics. The service information from VW
helps greatly to determine exactly how this sensor
works.

you can determine when it needs to be performed and have another shop, a dealer or a mobile tech do it for you. Updating the software is sometimes the only
way a vehicle can be repaired!
