FAN OPERATION: WHERE'S THE STRATEGY?
the problem was not a significant rise in coolant
temperature, let's consider why the A/C pressures
didn't trigger the high-speed fan. For the one specification, we did find that 240 psi reading, and the
technician saw that eventually the pressures rose
sufficiently to blow refrigerant out of the pressure
relief valve.
The technician did the right thing at the start: he
used his scan tool to command fans operation and
he was able to get both fan speeds to respond properly, so forget about the TIPM in this case. What
next? The high-speed fan is triggered by A/C highside pressure as noted, so the issue must be a defective transducer. After all, we know that's the standard pattern failure on so many Chrysler products,
and on the 300, the transducer is in a reasonable
service location: in the rear section of the liquid line
at the rear of the powertrain compartment (Figure
8). It certainly may have been a problem on a few
Chrysler products for several years (particularly
minivans), but not in this case, and the new trans

The 2006 Chrysler 300 had what should have been
a routine problem: the low-speed fan came on with
the right coolant temperature, but not with air conditioning. This wouldn't have been even noticed as
an issue if the high-speed fan came on with coolant
temperature, and it would, but the coolant temperature wasn't going up to the high-normal range that
would trigger it. What are those coolant temperature triggered fan numbers? We wish we could tell
you, and they're probably somewhere, but like a lot
of needed information, it's nowhere in the Chrysler
techinfo website (www.techauthority.com) that we
could find. Yes, there's a cooling system diagnostic chart, with an applicable listing: "Temperature
gauge reads high or cooling warning lamp illuminated." The diagnostic routine simply says: "Check
cooling fan drive operation. Refer to appropriate
diagnostic information." There was no link, as for
other problems in the chart, and nothing applicable
in the cooling and HVAC sections.
But because the low-speed fan did come on and
