Figure 5: This chart shows the temperature changes in airflow between
dash registers and floor outlets under mid-day conditions with low humidity and high ambient temperatures. In this case, the HVAC computer
strategy is to lower airflow temperatures from both dash and floor ductwork, what many people would consider normal operation. Ambient temperature was 95°F, car had been in a hot soak for six hours, HVAC was
set for 73°F and blower speed was high (No. 4), later lowered to No. 3.

son or another, but it is what it is. The system
has a built-in diagnostic mode and all the sensors
check out; no trouble codes. In a hot climate (this
took place in mid-summer), a floor air temperature
of almost 100°F (assuming the airflow is light and
dehumidified so it's dry) will not be uncomfortable and the driver will have cold air on his face
and chest. In addition, the car is equipped with
heated-cooled seats, so if the seat cooling is on (either manually set or automatic), the overall pas-

Figure 6: Weather conditions changed dramatically by the late afternoon
drive home shown in this chart. Ambient was 89°F at start with A/C set to
74°F. Motorist believed first 12 minutes of operation were normal as temperatures from floor and dash both dropped similarly. But then humidity
rose as rain started and gradually became heavy. Operation became similar
to that of damp morning conditions, but with some variation because system was switching to Auto mode.

senger comfort should be good. Most ATC systems
do have a manual mode, but the computer strategies for high-humidity situations take the fiddling
out of the control. If a system has no codes, you
can suggest a manual mode a motorist may like
better, but we don't think there is anything in the
software you can "fix." When an ATC computer
strategy results in a significant number of owner
complaints, the factory often will issue revised
software that the dealer can install to satisfy specific concerns. We haven't seen a new program in
the particular car's technical service bulletin list,
but if the motorist ends up keeping the car, you
can check for TSBs the next time the car is in your
shop. ■
