of the old coolant, so even after a good drain and
refill, Ford recommends that after the 105,000 mile
change, subsequent changes should be at 45,000
miles. There's also a time limit (1800 hours) for F250s in severe service (heavy towing, lots of idle
and low-speed use, and running primarily on biodiesel).
If there has been a lot of leakage in the vehicle's
history, you've got a find-the-leaks job with which
to start, and only if you can fix them without losing much coolant, should you go for the test strip
procedure and possibly a container of "revitalizer."
What is this "revitalizer?" We were told it was just
a heavier-than-spec mixture of the organic acids in
antifreeze concentrate. And that it was likely that

if the test strip check got a marginal reading, just
going over the 50/50 mixture with antifreeze concentrate would also restore the corrosion inhibitor
level to get a good reading with the test strip. Yes,
good cooling system maintenance is important for
a work truck like an F-250 diesel, and if the system
has been topped up periodically with a 50/50 mix
of a Dex-Cool spec antifreeze, just reset the coolant
light.
Models earlier than the 2011 model year were
filled with a totally different antifreeze: G-05, a
low-silicate formula. Don't mix the two; don't use
the Dex-Cool spec type on pre-2011 models with
G-05. ■
