Figure 13 and 14: When servicing the power electronics cooling systems on HEV and EVs be sure you are buying a premix with deionized water or demineralized water on the label. Premix coolant on left is Valvoline HOAT containing phosphates for OEM such as Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, and
Kia. Valvoline uses the term "deionized" for the water they put into their premix. Premix coolant on the right is Prestone's DEX-COOL licensed premix.
Prestone refers to their premix's water as "demineralized". Deionized and demineralized are the exact same thing. Distilled is NOT the same. Prestone
has promoted the sales of their high capacity containers of this coolant in order to bring the cost down in line with gallon jugs of concentrate coolants. Their
reason: to make sure DI / Demineralized water is used!
is requiring for both the coolant and the water that
goes into it if you still mix. Then carefully examine
the container 's label (Fig 13 & 14) and / or visit
the coolant manufacturer's website to learn more.
Learning what the various OEM recommendations
are and implementing them into your shop's best
practices for cooling system service may not always
be simple, cheap or convenient. But in the long run
those are some of the things that set us apart as
high quality automotive service professionals. At
