4. Module memory power is now being maintained by the clean battery charger / power
maintainer. NOTE: Some charger / maintainers will NOT supply continuous power if a
battery with a certain amount of voltage is
not detected when it is connected. In these
cases there may be an override switch that
can be selected in order to bypass this safety
function of the charger / maintainer.

cycle drops below an unacceptable threshold, the
battery management module will register a diagnostic fault code and would suggest diagnosis of
the charging system or replacement of the battery.
When a replacement battery is required, the battery
management module requires a diagnostic 'validation' or 'registration' procedure. Although these
systems are more commonly used on Start/Stop
models, battery validation requirement was neces-

Figures 7, 8 and 9: When replacing batteries for BMW, Mini, VW/Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover and Ford, a reset of the battery life in the vehicle's ECU must be
performed. Failing to perform this function may result in the vehicle's charging system over-charging a new replacement battery, which can result in the replacement
battery's early failure or even phantom drivability problems. These stand alone tools perform the battery reset / registration procedure w/o the need for an OEM
factory scan tool or capable aftermarket dealer level tool.

sary on Audi models as early as 2004. The Battery
Validation Package Tool offers a cost effective solution to the ever increasing requirement to diagnostically validate replacement batteries.

In addition to the obvious resetting of the vehicle's clock and radio station presets (if not stored in
EEPROM / NVRAM) numerous items on the vehicle will need to be reset / relearned. Some of these
resets may take place on their own. Others may require a scan tool. On those that require a scan tool,
the tool required to perform the relearn / reset
function can in some cases be the OEM factory scan
tool. Other vehicles may have relearn / reset functions available via aftermarket dealer level tools or
even standalone maintenance reset tools. (Fig. 7, 8,
& 9)
As modern technology evolves, more and more
OEMs use a BMS (Battery Management System)
that manages the degradation of the battery and
charges it accordingly. When the battery's duty

HVAC Actuators
HVAC actuators for example, may simply be commanded to their furthest movements in order for
the HVAC module to learn each actuator 's position.
Note: while actuators move from one extreme position to the other, many HVAC control modules
actually learn the curve of the actuator 's position
sensor. While some actuators are monitored for position by the current pulses of the actuator 's electric motor brushes and armature commentator segments, potentiometers (a.k.a. "Pots") are still quite
common. Pots are not 100 percent linear. By this we
