As I pull away from the house in the Escape, there
the needle does move a tiny bit
is very little " assist " to the ICE provided by the Hybrid
system, but

is considerable load on the 12-volt system with the
defroster running and temperature set to hot. As I
make my way to town, at every stop sign or traffic
light the system slightly regenerates on deceleration/braking
and the HV system provides minimal
assist on acceleration. After a while, even at this
cold ambient temperature, the Hybrid system provides
assist and regenerative braking comparable to
operating on a warm day.
What happened? The Hybrid System strategically
used the heat generated from the battery to warm
itself.
Tracking warmup in our '08 Prius has shown that
" Economy Mode " substantially increases the time
required for battery warm-up.

posely designed to direct airflow around the battery
blades or sticks evenly. The air gap between
the blades can be seen in Figure 2. Convection was
researched early-on during the development of Hybrids
but proved inadequate. Forced air was necessary
to maintain battery temperature.
Figure 3 shows the battery of an '08 Prius with the
interior panels removed for access. Hybrid service
will up your game when it comes to removing plastic
body panels without damaging them! I gave up on
shortcuts. If a panel is in the way, it comes out. If the
car is in my bay, it is likely older, and the panels are
brittle. Add cold temperature to the mix and I end
up making a trip to the scrap yard to grab a replacement
on my dime.
This Prius system is simple, effective, and a notable
example. Cool air is drawn in through the grate
on the passenger side trim panel at the " C " pillar
(Figure 4). It is wide open and should be kept clean.
Figure 5 shows the entire battery cooling system.
CABIN AIR is pulled in through the inlet grate at the
passenger C-Pillar into the inlet duct " A. " The cooling
fan " B " is a squirrel cage design identical to HVAC
