GM on-car diagnostics tell you to keep working
The December 2020 issue of MACS
Service Reports, in coverage of General
Motors Active Coolant Management
cooling systems, indicated that the aftermarket
shops would begin a learning
curve on diagnosis, and it hasn't taken
long for the curve to start curving. The
system has been in production since
some 2019 models, so we're basically
about four years of production into the
system, with its use of an electric water
pump that is rpm controllable. Add
in a complex set of coolant passages,
an additional coolant temperature sensor
and two coolant flow control valves
(Figures 1, 2).
The valves move to control coolant
flow through specific passages, and
the water pump rotates according to a
sophisticated computer program that
speeds warmup and on demand, maximizes
flow for heating. When there's a
coolant leak however, and no cooling
system is free of leakage for its lifeJune
