is logged under a specific set of operating conditions
that fit a special diagnostic logic protocol. The
coolant temperature sensors must not log any of the
codes applicable to their operation. The same applies
to the flow control valves. And the water pump's
applied current and actual current, which the electronics
can measure, must match. So, the computer
doesn't let other failures confuse its diagnosis. That
means you shouldn't have to pull the water pump for
physical inspection unless the computer diagnosis
indicates pump failure has occurred. Therefore, you
can look elsewhere first for possible causes of overheating,
such as in the airflow circuit. v
Pressure-testing
The 2016 Ford Transit 250 van (3.7-liter V6) comes
in with the complaint of poor cooling. The clutch on
the compressor engages, but sure enough, the air
coming out of the A/C registers is warm on the driver's
side, and nowhere near frigid on the passenger's
side. The typical technician connects a gauge
manifold set and checks the pressures, thinking
that
the system probably suffered loss of refrigerant.
However, the pressures are normal, so what
now? He checks the HVAC flap doors and they seem
to be moving normally.
He has an aftermarket electronic service information
system and looks for a bulletin. Bingo: on 20152019
models, there's an
apparent match: these vehicles
have a similar problem
with both cooling and/
or heating-uneven side to
side. The problem with the
heating is, of course, different
from the vehicle's A/C
issue. With the heating,

debris from the engine plugging
the heater and sadly
Ford specifies a full system
flush AND replacement of
the heater core (Figure 3).
Because this job is flat-rated
at 9.3 hours (it requires
removal of the Climate Control
assembly) and we all
know how optimistic factory
times are. It makes sense to
try to backflush the system
with a Hecat/Gates pulsating
flusher before facing a
job that is likely to take over
a day. Now let 's look at the
specific complaint-with
the A/C cooling.
