Do you have protective gloves?
That's the least OSHA recommends for EV service.
As electrified vehicles, including trucks, become
an increasing percentage of the on-the-road automotive
fleet, high voltage systems are a new fact of
life. And even for an HVAC specialist, that means you
need to take some special safety steps, including
for the technicians who work for you. Many shops
have purchased a Category III multimeter (1,000volt
ac rating) and think that if they remove a vehicle's
high-voltage plug (or in the case of Wrangler
plug-in, the cover) to disconnect the high voltage
battery pack, they can do HVAC service safely. The
voltage plug removal, however, doesn't come with
an ironclad guarantee and if it did, car manufacturers
wouldn't insist on your wearing the high-voltage
protective gloves. See Figure 5.
But OSHA (Occupational Health and Safety Administration)
has regulations that call for greater
safety procedures and recommendations for protective
gear, including boots and face shields. At the
very least are the high-voltage protective safety
gloves, (certified and labeled Class 0, rated at 1,000
volts). They're made of rubber and typically are offered
with (and should be worn with) leather outer
gloves over them. If this sounds like overkill, just be
assured by the fact this is what electrical linemen
wear. If you bought them and haven't used them yet,
you should know they don't really store well. They
have a " use by " date of one year, and if by that date
they've just been sitting around, they may have deteriorated
enough from heat and humidity (and possibly
from exposure to shop chemicals) as to lose
enough of their protective
quality. By the way,
the leather outer gloves
themselves offer no highvoltage
protection. Careful
linemen inspect their
gloves for any damage
or swelling before every
use and follow the useby
date religiously. Even
if you've " hardly used "
them, send the gloves
by the use-by date to a
lab that tests protective
equipment (there's a
trade association for independent
laboratories
that test and re-certify
or replace them, and you
can find a membership
list at www.nail4pet.org).
GM recommends
that
the rubber gloves be
tested by trapping air in
a glove, sealing the open
end, and pressing on the
glove to check for pinholes
and cut throughs.
Note: a " pass " doesn't
apply past the use-by
date. v
