When your flat rate guide saves you from the " twins "
The Cadillac CT4 and CT5 have been called " near
twins, " and in fact they both have the General Motors
2.0-liter four-cylinder as the standard engine. But
there's more significant differences than that engine
and six-inch greater overall length of the CT5, and
one of them is that the CT5 has an optional twinturbo
3.0-liter V6 and the CT4 offers a single turbo
dual volute (scroll) on its 2.7-liter four-cylinder.
That 's what you outwardly see, but if you think
the HVAC systems are the same, you could be badly
misled when you estimate the cost of replacing
the programmable temperature door actuators. Of
course, the prudent shop should/will check the flat
rate schedules in an aftermarket electronic service
information system. Even greater care includes the
technician checking with a car dealer service department
(if that is possible) to find out how realistic
is the flat rate schedule. For on new cars that schedule
is generated in large part by guys at computers,
using the manufacturing assembly procedures, and
checking clearances for access to fasteners with
computer-generated and sized " tools. " There are
no technicians with real wrenches and other tools
working at an actual vehicle or as long was done on
a prototype, pilot production car or an " engineering
buck. "
The " buck " was a physical representation of sections
of a vehicle, using actual parts. Today's computer-generated
new-car times are not often as
close to real world, and until the times are modified
by some input to factory warranty departments from
dealer technicians (an approach which can take
years), you can use the times only as a rough guide.
Aftermarket service information systems start
with the OE flat rate times (perhaps with an upward
" fudge factor " ), until they get input to the contrary
from their subscribers. We raise the subject because
these two particular Cadillac models are prone to
a service issue that can
turn on the check engine
light in ambient temperatures
below 60°F and
log trouble code B2805
and/or B2806. And the
fix is replacement of the
temperature door actuators.

vice procedure will indicate
what parts the factory
procedure indicates
will have to be removed
to service the temperature
door actuators on
the CT4 or CT5, and if
you see that you're facing
both underhood
and under-dash work,
including removal of
the dash and the HVAC
case, it 's surely not a
two-hour job. In fact,
because these cars are
late models just out of
warranty, the flat rate
