BY NORA BURBA TRULSSON Want to get the authentic flavor of Arizona’s diverse cities and towns? Park your car, get out and stroll along Main Street, the downtown district that defines a community. Okay, so maybe these downtown districts don’t all have a “Main Street” per se, but they do offer a sense of history and place, not to mention plenty of indie restaurants, boutiques, antiques shops, a museum or two and some quirky events. Here are just a few Arizona Main Street districts that give the state its colorful character.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE The small town of Snowflake was settled in the 1870s by sturdy Mormon pioneers who (928) 536-4331 www.snowflaketaylorchamber.org eschewed the wild and woolly trappings of typical Arizona frontier towns, opting instead for solid family values and solidly built homes. Today, you’ll see a town filled with neatly trimmed lawns, shade trees, white picket fences and front porches. Stop by the chamber of commerce for a walking-tour map of the 100-plus historic buildings around downtown’s Main Street, or make an appointment for a guided tour of five homes that are open to the public. Duck into small storefronts for a cup of coffee, a piece of fudge or an Snowflake’s John A.
