Fort Verde State Historic Park in Camp Verde preserves the military installation established in 1871 to protect the Verde Valley from Indian raids. The forests and rises around Payson were popularized by Zane Grey, who had a cabin near town; a replica home (the original was destroyed by fire) holds a museum dedicated to the author. Cowboy Artists of America got its start at Sedona’s Cowboy Club restaurant, and the Sedona Heritage Museum displays posters of films that have the town’s rugged scenery as backdrop. Pure family fun, Blazin’ M Ranch Wild West Adventure Town in Cottonwood puts on a chuckwagon dinner show in a reconstructed Western town.
