8 COWBOY CULTURE
Arizona’s first (1864) Territorial capital—you can view the governor’s log “mansion” at the Sharlot Hall Museum—Prescott is home to Whiskey Row, once lined with saloons and brothels, and to the Phippen Museum, where the frontier is captured on canvas. Fort Verde State Historic Park in Camp Verde preserves the military installation established in 1871 to protect the Verde Valley from Indian raids. The forests and rises around Payson were popularized by Zane Grey, who had a cabin near town; a replica home (the original was destroyed by fire) holds a museum dedicated to the author. Cowboy Artists of America got its start at Sedona’s Cowboy Club restaurant, and the Sedona Heritage Museum displays posters of films that have the town’s rugged scenery as backdrop. Pure family fun, Blazin’ M Ranch Wild West Adventure Town in Cottonwood puts on a chuckwagon dinner show in a reconstructed Western town.

See what life was like for an 1870s frontier soldier at Fort Verde State Historic Park in Camp Verde.
Take a simulated ride on the Space Shuttle Polaris at the Gov Aker Observatory, on Safford’s Discovery Park Campus. You’ll start by soaring over nearby Mt. Graham, a 10,720-foot-high peak with a world-renowned national observatory.
