Chapter 2. Supporting Documents Massachusetts/California Emissions Standards All passenger vehicles and light duty trucks (6,000 pounds gross vehicle weight or less) and medium duty trucks (6,001-14,000) manufactured from 1995 forward must be equipped with a Massachusetts/California emissions package in order to be registered in Massachusetts. By law, the Registry of Motor Vehicles CANNOT register a new vehicle that does not comply with the new emissions standards. To determine if a vehicle complies with these standards, look at the manufacturer's certificate of origin available from your dealer. If the certificate contains the following terms, or a version similar, the vehicle complies: * This vehicle meets/satisfies California emissions standards. * This vehicle meets/satisfies Massachusetts emissions standards. * This vehicle is certified/legal for sale in Massachusetts. * This vehicle is certified/legal for sale in 50 states. Statements that do not comply: * This vehicle meets/satisfies Federal emission standards * This vehicle is certified/legal for sale in 49 states * This vehicle is certified/legal for sale in New York or Vermont * A dealership certification stamp * No statement If the certificate of origin states the vehicle complies, you may register your new vehicle. A new vehicle cannot be registered without the approved certificate of origin. Here is a link to the RMV Emissions Index.https://www.mass.gov/service-details/vehicle-inspections
