Massachusetts Titles Title Brand of Vehicle Signed Over to An Insurance Company Salvage Title Policy for Vehicle Under Ten Years Old Vehicles with a manufacturer's model year less than ten years old signed over from the owner to an insurance company after being declared a total loss must be given a classification of salvage. The insurance company must obtain a salvage title with the appropriate secondary brand and must go through the complete salvage process. The salvage classification is permanent and the vehicle can never again have a clear title. Vehicles with a Model Year Over Ten Years Old at the Time of the Total Loss Vehicles with a manufacturer's model year over ten years old at the time of the total loss are exempt from the salvage process and do not require a salvage title when signed over to an insurance company. The insurance company may reassign the title using the first reassignment by licensed dealer (on the back of the title). For customer protection and to ensure that future owners are aware of the vehicle history, these vehicles, when retitled, must have a reconstructed or recovered theft brand and the appropriate secondary brand.
