Chapter 3. Semi-Trailer Plates Semi-Trailer: A. Definition: Semi-Trailer is a vehicle without motive power, designed for carrying persons or property, and for being drawn by a motor vehicle and so constructed so that some part of its weight and that of its load rests upon or is carried by the towing vehicle (permanently mounted rear axle only). A four wheel dolly, when used in conjunction with a tractor or tractor/trailer combination, must be registered as a semi-trailer with the combined weight of the dolly plus the tractor. The weight of the trailer does not determine if the trailer is classified as a semi or regular. B. Plate Types: There are two types of semi-trailer plates: Semi Normal (Plate Type: SMN) Semi Normal plates consist of three to five numbers. Semi Reserved (Plate Type: SMR) Semi Reserved plates consist of one or two numbers C. Plates Issued: Semi Normal and Reserved-Two plates are issued. D. Plate Fees: A semi normal plate is charged a $300 flat fee for five years. If a Semi-Trailer is to be registered for less than five years, fees will be prorated. A Semi Reserved plate is charged the Semi Normal plate fee plus a special plate fee of $100 ($20 per year). The gross weight of the semi-trailer must be included when registering the trailer since it is used in calculating the gross weight of the tractor. E. Expiration Date: Semi-Trailer plates expire every five years on June 30 and are valid for a maximum of 5 years and a minimum of 13 months. 11/09
