Chapter 5. License and ID Cards Who Needs a Massachusetts License Residents of Massachusetts are required to have a valid MA license to legally operate a vehicle in MA. Out-of-state and foreign-licensed drivers MUST obtain a MA driver's license upon becoming a MA resident. Beginning on July 24, 2016, the " next generation " of driver's licenses and identification (ID) cards will be issued by the RMV. The new licenses and ID cards are among the most secure and technologically advanced in all of North American and demonstrate the RMVs commitment to maintaining the integrity of the Commonwealth's most important identification documents. Following are some facts to know about the new license and ID cards: * All driver's license and ID cards issued by the RMV will be produced using a new design beginning on July 24, 2016. * A current (non-expired) driver's license and ID card will remain acceptable throughout the transition period (approximately five years). * Current cards will be phased out through the normal renewal process. There will be no need to rush to the RMV. * New cards contain Real ID security features.
