Dr. Spiegel: This is the transcript of an expert
roundtable discussion on the topic of facial feminization/facial
gender confirming surgery in 2022.
I am pleased to moderate this conversation with the
assembled experts who bring diverse experience
and backgrounds. We have surgeons with backgrounds
in academics and private practice, plastic
surgery and facial plastic surgery, and years of
exposure to the field.
I'm Dr. Jeffrey Spiegel, a facial plastic surgeon in
private practice outside of Boston, MA, and a professor
of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at
Boston University School of Medicine. I have been
involved in this field for over 22 years. First, we will
ask each panelist to please introduce themselves.
Dr. Alperovich: My name is Mike Alperovich. I am
an associate professor of plastic surgery at Yale. I am
also codirector of craniofacial surgery. I have a plastic
surgery background and, about 4 or 5 years ago, started
doing a lot of gender affirming care. I really have enjoyed
it, and it has become a big part of my practice.
Dr. Garcia: I am Laura Garcia-Rodriguez. I am an
otolaryngologist, head and neck surgeon and facial
plastics trained. I was a fellow in facial plastic and

reconstructive surgery with Dr. Spiegel from 2017 to
2018. I returned to Detroit after fellowship and have
been working and Henry Ford Health. The Detroit area
is very underserved and socioeconomically depressed.
Many of my patients are African American and Latina
ladies in whom never thought surgery was attainable.
Since working in Detroit, my practice has grown
vastly and now get patients from all parts of Michigan
and from outside of the state.
Dr. Knott: I am a professor of otolaryngology, headneck
surgery at UCSF. And I have been at UCSF for
about 11 years now. I have started the gender affirmation
program in our department with my current partner,
Dr. Rahul Seth, and another ofmy partners, Dr. Andrea
Park. We began doing these surgeries about 6 to 7 years
ago. Dr. Spiegel was so kind to let us come out and learn
under his guidance and welcomed us to his practice to
learn some of his techniques. And we have tried to
continue with working at San Francisco and trying to
generate some new ideas and approaches.
Dr. Rodman: Hi, Dr. Regina Rodman here. I am in
private practice in Houston, TX. I did residency here in
Houston. And then I did a craniofacial fellowship at
SUNY Upstate. We did a lot of orthognathic surgery,
