DEPARTMENTS The introduction of new, more effective treatments to the standard of care is vital to improving outcomes for British Columbians facing cancer. This progress- which is often years in the making-begins with clinical trials. Clinical trials unite teams of experts within the BC Cancer Agency, collaborators from cancer centres across the globe, and generous patients who are willing to make a visionary contribution to cancer knowledge in the midst of their own cancer journeys. By supporting clinical trials from their inception, BC Cancer Foundation donors have an opportunity to impact the lives of thousands of individuals who may have limited treatment options or for whom the current standard of care is simply not effective enough. Clinical trials are one of the most important ways to accelerate change in the way cancer is treated and ensure that more British Columbians will be able to say, "I'm still here." In this issue of Partners in DISCOVERY magazine, we will take you behind the scenes to learn how promising treatment strategies move from the researcher's bench to the patient's bedside, and how new concepts are tested for safety and effectiveness and compared with current protocols. On page 8, you'll read about how years of dedication by Dr. Marianne Sadar and her colleagues have enabled a promising new drug for metastatic prostate cancer to enter clinical trials. Then, turn to page 10 to learn how clinical trials develop from early concepts to meaningful solutions for patients. In British Columbia, we are truly fortunate to have driven leaders who routinely challenge the status quo for the benefit of cancer patients and their families, as well as generous BC Cancer Foundation donors who are committed to ensuring their success every step along the way. Thank you for being our partners in discovery. 3 Opening Thoughts 4 Healthy Insights 6 Why I Give 7 Researcher Proļ¬le 14 Legacy Giving Lou Del Gobbo Interim President & CEO BC Cancer Foundation 15 Regional Roundup W W W.BCCANCERFOUNDATION.COM 3 http://WWW.BCCANCERFOUNDATION.COM
